Get Your Feet Ready for Summer
March 04, 2018
Sandal season is finally here, which means our feet and toes are on display. Those who suffer from brittle, discolored toenails are none too happy about this change in season.
The warmer months bring an increase in humidity and sweaty feet — a condition perfect for the growth of toenail fungus. These infections are caused by a group of fungi or molds that enjoy living in the dead skin around, under and on the nail bed. It is characterized by dark discoloration of the toenail which can be gray, yellow, green, brown or white. According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, an estimated 13 percent of Americans, or roughly 35 million people, have toenail fungus.
Treating a fungal nail can be difficult, but there is hope. The FDA-approved Pinpoint FootLaser treatment can painlessly kill the fungus, and in many cases, allow the nail to grow normally again. Results can be seen in as quickly as one to three 10-minute treatments. This outpatient service uses a gentle laser light beam that has no effect on healthy tissue and treats only the infected area of the toe. Clinical studies show that PinPointe FootLaser treatment kills toenail fungus and promotes clear nail growth with a single treatment in more than 88% of cases. It is safe, effective and most patients improve right away.
No drugs or topical ointments are used, eliminating the total-body side effects of traditional oral medications. At the time of the procedure, the toenail will not become instantly clear – it takes time for the nail to grow out.
